Health and Diet – Make the Connection

Hello lovelies! Ask yourself this – what’s stopping you from achieving your health goals? I’m not talking about having great skin or losing some weight. I’m talking about getting well. Healing a health condition.

For many people using food as medication instead of pills can be an alien concept. We’re so used to visiting the GP to be sent away with a truck load of topical creams, antibiotics, stronger pain medication or just being told we need to live with it. NO!

I can’t stress enough how your health is directly linked to what you put in your mouth. You can heal or greatly alleviate many conditions just by changing your diet. It’s that simple.

If you find yourself going back and forth to your GP and not achieving the health results you’re looking for, why not try a different avenue?

I have many clients with a range of different health conditions enjoying the best health of their lives simply by looking at healing through diet. I can guide you and let you know which foods may be causing or making certain health conditions worse. I can design a personalised plan just for you with ongoing support and coaching to get you through to wellness.

Your body is awesome. It WANTS to be well. Many people see huge progress within just a few weeks. A dietary approach is the safest and simplest avenue to try – no toxic drugs, no crazy supplements…food. That’s it.

If you have any health condition then I can probably help but here are a few examples of what I successfully deal with on a regular basis – IBS, food intolerance, kids health, arthritis pain, autoimmune, eczema, psoriasis, acne, anxiety, depression, type 2 diabetes, sugar cravings and hormone imbalance.

My method is to create a healing environment in your body. Doing this will allow your body to do all the work – it will make itself well all by itself given the right opportunity – and quickly too.

The Digestive Enzyme Solution

Food intolerance and IBS are usually super easy to rectify using a food elimination process. Within 2 weeks you’re usually symptom free and ready to start food testing and reintroduction. But, sometimes digestive discomfort can be caused by more than just a reaction to foods – it can be caused when your body doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes to break down your food. Symptoms of this include bloating, floating stool, nausea, indigestion, aches and pains, stomach pains, blood sugar imbalance, belching, feeling full before you’ve finished a meal and constipation.

Enzymes are essential for every cell in your body – in fact all of your physiological processes. They are composed of amino acids and there are around 3000 different ones. But, those are just the enzymes that have been discovered. Some scientists believe that there may be more than 50000 more yet to be identified.

Enzymes are responsible for reducing inflammation, energy production, nutrient absorption, detoxification, breaking down fats and balancing hormones. A deficiency in these enzymes can cause all sorts of discomfort.

According to Dr. Edward Howell you are born with limited enzyme producing capabilities and if you don’t get enough enzymes from the food you eat then a lot of strain is put on your digestive system to produce enough to break down your food. Most digestive and metabolic enzymes are produced by your pancreas.

A typical western diet is made up of processed and cooked foods. This, along with the overuse of medicines and drugs like antibiotics, can lead to a massive imbalance in your ability to breakdown and absorb nutrients from your food, leading to chronic health conditions and deficiencies. Not only this, but your immune system starts in your gut, so any deficiency in the gut can greatly impair your immune defences.

The best way to get enzyme rich foods is to eat them raw. So adding a high raw element to your diet is always advisable. The use of mouth washes and chewing gum can affect the enzyme in saliva, further causing digestive upset.

Some foods contain specific digestive enzymes, these include sprouted seeds and legumes, papaya, pineapple, avocado, coconut and extra virgin olive oil, mango, kiwi and grapes.

A lot of raw fruit and veg is termed as “pre-digested” food, so its very gentle on your digestive system. In fact, most people spend 80% of their energy simply digesting food! The digestive system wasn’t designed to be so over worked which could be why a large portion of the population suffer with low energy levels and fatigue.

The use of supplemented digestive enzymes could be beneficial for those suffering with digestive discomfort and mist be taken with a meal. They are safe but I would always recommend speaking with a qualified professional to asses your symptoms first before taking anything you don’t really need to be taking.

Cashew Cream Cheese

1425306396115

You know what i love? Cream cheese. You know what i don’t love? Dairy, animal cruelty, factory farming, additions like pain medications, antibiotics, anti-fungals and hormones. I also don’t like disease and inflammation.

But, that’s just me. I deal with a lot of clients who can’t tolerate dairy because of food intolerance or IBS. So, whatever your reasons, there’s always an alternative.

I make my cheese out of cashews. Why wouldn’t you opt for plantbased goodness?

This is herb and chilli cream cheese. Took about 10 minutes to make using soaked cashews. Easy and healthy.

300g cashews soaked for 2 hours in water
1 tbsp dried mixed herbs
Pinch of rock salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 finger chilli (or to taste)
3 tbsp hemp oil

Put everything in a food processor and blend. Blend blend blend. Scrape down the sides and get blending some more until its super smooth and creamy. That’s it!

Emotional effects of food intolerance on children. Client case study.

Food sensitivities in children are very common. They can present themselves in the physical sense which might be diarrhoea, constipation, frequent colds, ear and throat infection, constant runny nose or cough and abdominal pain. But they can also present themselves in emotional and mental ways too – in fact this is more common than the “classic” food intolerance signs.

As a culture we eat a lot of processed foods and factory farmed foods and “drinks” without realising the effects it has on your mental wellbeing. Doctors like to suggest kids grow out of these things. I don’t agree. Their bodies just learn to cope and so surpress the symptoms. Later in life they can reemerge as different illnesses. This is called The Stages of Adaption.

Here is a case study kindly written for me by a client about her daughter and the issues she had been facing. I can’t even begin to explain how common this is and how relieved I am that Jessica feels better.

“I thought jessica was a typical 5-6 year old with tantrums, crying, aggression and lack of concentration when I came across a case study on Tonic Nutrition website about the link between dairy & gluten and children’s behaviour. I spoke to Lynsey about it and we discussed a plan to take jessica dairy & gluten free. To be honest I was sceptical and my hubby was even more so! But we went a long anyway. I would say it’s took between 2-3 weeks until I started to notice that she seemed a lot calmer, less stroppy and even sleeping better at night.

Still a little sceptical we carried on until it came to Christmas were we let her have a bit of diary and gluten here and there and the difference was immense! Wow….it was like her evil twin came to stay!!
She also started crying at night and complaining of a sore and itchy foof (our name for the downstairs area).

As I said before my hubby isn’t a huge believer so I tried to imply that it maybe due to her being out of her routine (Christmas holidays) and we decided to continue to give her small amounts of dairy & gluten whilst she got back to school and into her routine to see if this settled or not. Guess what…. They didn’t!!

We immediately took her off it (after a huge explosive tantrum) and within 1 week things slowly started improving. After two weeks things were definitely improving. She also stopped complaint about her foof too. I didn’t even understand what it was exactly I thought it was her not wiping correctly. It wasn’t until I spoke to Lynsey that I realise it was a yeast infection she was getting.

We are now into week 4 and things are looking good. Don’t get me wrong she is 6 years old so she isn’t perfect and will still have tantrums but they are much more manageable now”.

Super healthy 4 course meal from me to you xoxo

Here’s an idea for you.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert.

All #dairyfree#glutenfree#sugarfree. You may have food intolerance, be vegan or just looking for tasty, healthy alternatives. Whatever your reason for looking for something different I’m sure you’ll love these! Feel free to share and spread the Tonic love!

Clockwise from top left:

BREAKFAST: Overnight vanilla soy oats layered with chopped mixed nuts, shaved coconut and topped with homemade strawberry & raspberry jam (blended defrosted frozen berries with half a tsp of Truvia).
Raw overnight oats method: in a jar, add 2 tsp vanilla extract and some soy milk to your dry oats. Stir and leave overnight. Layer up with the other goodies in the morning. The benefit of raw oats is that they’re much more nutritious. Soaking them dissolves the phytic acid which surrounds all grains. This allows the nutrients in the oats to be absorbed better by your body.

LUNCH: Fabulous falafels! These are yellow split pea and chickpea. Cook the yellow split peas and chickpeas. Drain then add lemon juice, sea or rock salt, mixed herbs, garlic, and little oil (sesame or rapeseed?). Soften some leeks and onions in a pan. Mix everything together and pulse briefly in a food processor. Roll into balls and oven bake until golden. Approx 20 minutes at 190 degrees C. Serve with hummus, garlic and cayenne tofu mayo and a fresh salad.

DINNER: Lasagne!
Pasta free
Cheese free
Meat free
Fat free
Dairy free
Gluten free
Okay….This was a little more time consuming than I’d usually like but I was cooking for a few people and it really only took 40 minutes including cooking time. So not too bad really.

Lasagne:
Use sliced courgette in place of pasta sheets, slice thinly or use a potato peeler (I used the peeler).
I layered mine up with barely cooked broccoli, mushrooms, leeks and carrots. I used a tomato passata sauce but added in extra garlic, mixed herbs and paprika for a smokey flavour.

Cheese(less) sauce:

Boil up 2 or 3 cups of cauliflower in lightly salted water.
Blend with oat milk, 2 tsp Dijon mustard, 3 tbsp nutritional yeast, rock or sea salt and black pepper.
Layer everything in a casserole dish. Top with sliced tomatoes and an extra sprinkle of nutritional yeast.
Bake at 220 for approx 20 minutes.
Garnish with fresh basil.

DESSERT: Raw jammy, coconut, creamy, chocolatey, ice cream pots.

Pre-freeze some peeled and chopped bananas. Blend them in your food processor with a little vanilla essence.
Swirl in some raw blackberry jam (simply defrost some blackberries, blend with a 1/4 tsp Stevia)
Blob on 2 tsp coconut cream (the cream from the top of a can of coconut milk)
Add chunks of raw brownie
Sprinkle over some crushed raw cacao nibs or dark chocolate drops.

More Success With IBS and Food Intolerance

IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be a chronic and debilitating illness which, according to doctors, has no cure and you basically just have to live with it. But what if you haven’t been “diagnosed” with IBS but are still suffering from similar symptoms?

Its still frustrating, painful, embarrassing at times and I’m sure pretty miserable!

I’m proud to say I have a 100% success rate with treating both IBS and general food intolerance. There is no need to suffer and literally, within 14 days, symptoms can be gone.

I’m not saying I have a cure – I haven’t. There isn’t one. But it is possible to live completely without symptoms and be in full control. Each case is always different which is why there isn’t a blanket approach for this. I have just received a lovely testimonial from a client who has been suffering for years with food intolerance.

Toxins built up from these illnesses not only affect you physically, but also mentally and emotionally too. It’s often quite a profound experience when you finally detoxify and get rid of those symptoms.

“After suffering for years with bloating, constipation and tummy pain I stumbled across Tonic on Facebook. I read through lots of her recipes and posts and decided to give it a go…..I had a chat with her on Skype and instantly warmed to her, somehow already knowing this was my path in life and was going to help me! Well a few months later and WOW! I am a changed person, all symptoms have gone (initially within 14 days!) and even my skin and hormones are feeling and looking fabulous! This is a change for life and one I’m very happy to keep going with! Lynsey is there for you every step of the way, its like gaining a fairy Godmother! Years of trying different medication from doctors who don’t care and don’t listen are a thing of the past. Natural plant based is the easy obvious choice for me and my family now. I can’t thank Lynsey enough xx”

I deal with new food intolerance clients every week. Some who have been through the medical system and even had invasive surgery to find out the problem! No matter how chronic you think your symptoms are, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to sort out.

The Arms Have it. Food Intolerance Experiment…

Ok everyone! Who’s for a little experiment?
Roll up your sleeves and feel the skin on your upper arms – back and front. Do you have raised bumps or “chicken skin”?

If the answer is yes then you most likely have a food intolerance or internal imbalance. This raised, bumpy skin is called Keratosis Pilaris.

Like all skin conditions, the root cause of Keratosis Pilaris is likely the result of an internal imbalance. All skin conditions indicate that the internal organs are not properly processing nutrients and/or toxins.

Any toxins that build up in excess are pushed outward to the skin as a last resort for elimination, because the other elimination organs are not able to process the toxic load. Some skin conditions can also be caused by a lack of essential nutrients.

Take a quiet moment and try to reconnect with your body (oh come on now, lets get our hippy on!). How are you feeling? Do you have any other symptoms of ill health? Fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, dizzy spells, persistent cough or cold…? Just feeling…meh?

If so….sort it out. When you have food intolerance, no matter how mild, you will not be absorbing enough nutrients from your food and your body will be under constant stress. What seems mild now could manifest into something more serious, or harder to live with as time goes on.

We’re here for a good time, not a long time so at least let yourself feel good enough to enjoy this crazy life! To. The. Max.

Success Already in 2015!

Awesome start to 2015. Honestly my clients totally ROCK IT.

Regaining health and starting the healing process can happen by making such simple changes that people are often really sceptical. Yep. I get a lot of strange looks.

We’ve been conditioned to think that extreme is the norm when it comes to health and lifestyle. Juicing, fasting, restrictions, starving, cabbage soup, pills, shakes and sachets….waaa! Screw that.

If you have a chronic illness then you will need a specific health plan tailored to your illness, but if you’re just feeling a bit “meh” then a few simple changes and some inspiration can work wonders!

And when results jump up and kick you up the wazoo it’s a real lightbulb moment! “Can it really be this simple…? (and delicious and awesome and easy and fun…and delicious”. YES!

“I have a breakthrough discovery to share! Yesterday and today I made pancakes with gluten-free flour. And for the first time in my life I didn’t feel bloated after eating pancakes and even felt uplifted! I am absolutely gobsmacked. The taste is not that different and pancakes are so easy to make (I mixed flour+soy milk in a smootie maker). I’m so grateful to Lynsey for her consultation, inspiring and liberating diet tips and recipes, thanks Lynsey xx I’ve cut down on meat, replaced cow’s milk products with plant-based ones, and refined sugar with agave nectar, have never felt better!”
